Whole Harvest
Soybean Cooking Oil Products
|
Whole Harvest of
North Carolina makes several soybean oil
products for cooking. These are great
alternatives to trans fat laden cooking
products. Soybean oil is versatile and can be
used for sautéing, frying, baking and to coat
pans to prevent sticking.
Transfatfree.com
recently sampled some of Whole Harvest's
offerings and had the following reviews:

Whole Harvest
Smart Coat Pan Coating
This spray-on pan
coating is much like other non-stick pan sprays
available on the market. It is made from 100%
expeller pressed, physically refined soybean oil
and soy lecithin. In one serving (defined as a
spray lasting a quarter of a second) there are
no calories (and also no nutrients).
Our first use was
for coating a griddle to make pancakes. Since
pancakes would not mask a strong flavor or
odor, we thought they would be a better test
case than meat or vegetables. The spray was not
only effective for preventing sticking, it was
completely flavorless. Great! Next we tried it
for sautéing some vegetables. Again, it
prevented sticking without adding calories from
fat! We still want to try it as a baking spray
and we'll report back when we do so…

SmartFry
Okay, we admit it…
getting a sample of the Whole Harvest frying oil
made us want fried chicken. And, what better way
to test it out than to fire up the deep fryer
and pop in some chicken drummettes for buffalo
wings?
First, we'll give
you the specs. SmartFry is made from 100%
expeller pressed physically refined soybean oil
with the addition of an anti-foaming agent. Its
smoke point is 484 degrees F and the flash point
is 560 degrees F. Soybean oil is a good source
of vitamin E and is free of trans fat. Like
other cooking oils, 1 tablespoon has 14g of fat.
So, back to our
fried chicken. Delicious. The oil delivered
excellent results with mild, undetectable
flavor. Yes, we tested the chicken before we
added the hot wings sauce while our taste buds
were still functioning. We give SmartFry two
chicken legs up.
Whole Harvest
Culinary Oil
Whole Harvest also
makes a culinary soybean oil. We'll be bringing
you a review of it as soon as we finish up the
leftover buffalo wings.
